As the sole graphic designer in an architectural firm. I followed the creative process from conceptualization to publication to produce a variety of publications in print and digitally. I guided students in exploring digital reproduction techniques using Adobe Creative Suite software. I also led students through the pre-production, production, and post-production phases of video project development.
As the head of the ESOL departments at two international schools, I collaborated with teachers by working alongside them in the classroom and facilitating teacher trainings. I have presented workshops at conferences in Asia, Europe, and the United States.
I am a successful educator not merely because I teach my students how to communicate through language, explore digital design, or perform as an ensemble. Equally as important, I instill confidence in my students and respect for others.
I understand that each student is unique. The information I present is processed, analyzed and integrated with what my students already know and have experienced. I take into account the different learning strategies my students find most helpful to them and present lessons which expose them to a variety of techniques that focus on different ways of learning. I recognize the importance of the process of learning. Each student learns at different rates from his peers. This means that one student may master new material rapidly and another must practice it repeatedly before he internalizes it. I constantly develop short term strategies that lead to long term goals and I continuously devise strategies which keep my instruction vital, alive and relevant to students’ lives.
My students and I must build mutual trust and respect for each other. Awareness of cultural diversity and the need to share and respect our similarities and differences is crucial. I let my students know that their worth as a person is not being judged based on their errors. Indeed, mistakes are a natural and necessary part of any learning. Students should feel comfortable taking risks and learning from their mistakes and developing their awareness so that they have control over how and what they learn. Too much interference or negative corrections may cause the student to slow down because he is overly concerned with perfection. It may even cause the student to withdraw from the learning process and stop trying. This would defeat the purpose of encouraging students to develop, support and communicate their ideas to others.
While I am certified to teach a variety of subjects and I enjoy teaching students from around the world how to communicate through language, I also explore ways to communicate through imagery. I am very comfortable interacting with large and small groups of people. Whether facilitating a classroom discussion, collaborating with colleagues in a staff meeting, or communicating with parents about their children, I confidently express my thoughts and encourage others to share their ideas.
